CUYAHOGA FALLS - Betty Jean (Branham) Hammonds, 84, started her new life on August 16, 2011.
The daughter of Effie Beckett Edwards Rucker and loving step father Chando (Doc) Rucker, she was born on May 26, 1927 in Pond Gap, West Virginia. Her birth father was Landon Lee Branham.
Betty was a resident of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio leaving West Virginia in 1956. She worked as a waitress and mixologist at many local area restaurants. Later in life she purchased homes for restoration and resale in the Cuyahoga Falls and Akron area and was a caregiver for her husband until 2003. She also volunteered at various shelters and community kitchens in Akron.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Rexford M. Hammonds Sr.; son Rexford M. Hammonds Jr., daughter Peggy L. Miller and great-grandson Richard Spencer. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in law Thomas (Cathy) of Stow, Ohio, Mike (Michaelann) of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; daughter and son in law Olivia (Tony) Rubino of Doylestown; son-in-law Timothy (Barbara) Miller of Tomball, Texas, and daughter-in-law Jean (Jerry) Nichols of Randolph, Ohio; 19 grandchildren, and 53 great grandchildren; special, dearest cousin Bonnie Hudnall Hapney of Cedar Grove and Mary Hudnall of Pond Gap, West Virginia; many nephews and nieces, many step brothers and sisters and many friends.
Betty was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Cuyahoga Falls since 2004. Prior to 2004 she attended the Northwest Avenue Church of Christ.
Friends may call from 4-7 pm, Saturday, August 20, in the Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home, 1930 Front St., Cuyahoga Falls and 2-3 pm Sunday, August 21 at the United Presbyterian, 2819 Hudson Dr., Cuyahoga Falls where a Funeral Service will be held at 3 pm. Rev. Joseph Rubino and Rev. J. Ross Slaughter officiating. The burial will be at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Rd., Rittman, OH at 1 pm on Monday, August 22.
