CUYAHOGA FALLS - David Linus Ewart passed away on June 14, 2015, following a long illness.
Born in Cuyahoga Falls on May 9, 1926, he was the son of Kennyth L. and Lucile (Gillivan) Ewart. A 1944 graduate of Cuyahoga Falls High School, David served in the U.S. Navy toward the end of World War II. He went on to The Ohio State University, receiving a degree in industrial engineering in 1949. He was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity and of the wrestling team, which he captained in his senior year.
Following graduation, he returned to Cuyahoga Falls to join his father in the Ewart-Ohlson Machine Company. He eventually became president, and then chairman of the board. Under his leadership, the company, which in its early years provided machining services to Akron's rubber factories, grew and diversified, becoming a supplier to the aerospace, defense, and oil field industries.
In 1952, David married Margaret Wright, beginning a devoted, lifelong partnership.
As well as his work and family, he loved his community and his church (Pilgrim United Church of Christ), where he held a number of offices. He also served as chairman of the Cuyahoga Falls Park and Recreation Board and president of the Cuyahoga Falls Jaycees; he was a charter member of Silver Lake Country Club and a passionate supporter of Ohio State athletics.
David was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John R. Ewart.
He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy; their three children, Diane L. Grabowski (John), Brian L. Ewart (William McHenry), and Janet L. Ewart (Richard Sawyer); and grandsons Benjamin and Gregory.
Cremation has taken place, with a private burial at Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Cuyahoga Falls. A memorial service will be held 11:00am Monday, July 13, 2015 at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, where friends may call one hour before the service time. Dr. Don Nichols officiating.
The family wishes to thank all those, too numerous to name, who offered their support and help during the last five years of David's illness; in particular, the staff of Crown Center at Laurel Lake for their loving care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 130 Broad Blvd., Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, or to a charity of choice. Services entrusted to Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home and Crematory, 330-928-2147.
