David Russ

CUYAHOGA FALLS- David W. Russ, 71, lived an inspiring life. Dave was born on September 6, 1946 in Canandaigua, New York to the late Clement and Connie (Reynolds) Russ. He died peacefully at home on March 13, 2018, surrounded by his loving family
Dave graduated from Elyria Catholic High School in 1964, attended Ohio University and graduated from Kent State University. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1968. His service was honored by a veteran pinning ceremony the day he died.
Dave was a gifted writer, working as a journalist at Elyria Chronicle Telegram and in Public Relations at Firestone, Goodyear, and the University of Akron.
Dave's passions included writing, reading, biking, swimming, boating, hiking, and activities with family. He loved any opportunity to sing and dance. He spent many happy childhood summers at Canandaigua Lake. His volunteer services included donating blood, working at the International Institute to help immigrants by teaching English as a second language and setting up apartments for them. He was a member of the funeral choir and an enthusiastic reader "elf" on the Polar Express in Akron.
He is survived by his loving wife, Helen. He also leaves behind his amazing children Beth Russ (Aaron), Jackie Stillwagon (Scott), John (Natasha), and Michael (Trishina). He is also survived by brothers Carl (Lettie) and Ed (Betsy), and sister, Anne (Jim) Somplack.
Donations may be made in Dave's memory to the Humane Society of Summit County at 7996 Darrow Rd, Twinsburg, OH 44087. He never left a dog or cat unpetted.
The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to all his caregivers and to the Hospice of the Western Reserve.
Memorial calling will be held from 5-7 PM on Friday March 16, 2018 at the Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home 1930 Front St. Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday March 17 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.. Fr. James Singler will be officiating. Services entrusted to Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home and Crematory, 330-928-2147.
