Lt. Col. Donald L. Overfield, U.S. Air Force (Ret.) April 14, 1930 – February 6, 2025
Donald L. Overfield, beloved brother, distinguished Air Force officer, and accomplished professional, passed away on February 6, 2025. Born on April 14, 1930, in Akron, Ohio, Don spent his early years in his hometown before his family moved to Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, in February 1946.
Growing up during the Great Depression and World War II, Don lived just a mile south of the Goodyear Air Dock, where Navy Corsairs were assembled. As a young teen he watched these aircraft being test-flown before their deployment in the war, an experience that would later inspire his own service in the United States Air Force.
Don attended Glover & Voris Elementary Schools, Garfield High School, and Cuyahoga Falls High School, graduating in 1948. He pursued higher education at the University of Akron and Miami University (Ohio) before earning his bachelor’s degree in business from Kent State University in 1953.
On February 1, 1954, Don began active duty with the U.S. Air Force as a Second Lieutenant and completed Primary Pilot Training in October of that year. After transitioning to the Air Force Reserve in 1956, he returned to Akron and began a successful career in data processing with Evans Savings & Loan Co. Through his professional connections, he secured a position as a manager in Data Processing with Standard Oil Co. in Cleveland, Ohio. When BP acquired Standard Oil in 1985, Don accepted an early retirement after 27 years of service.
During his distinguished military career, Don completed both the Command & Staff School and the Air War College. His dedication and service earned him the National Defense Service Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. He retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1981 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Lois Kohut. He is survived by his brother, Kenneth, who, along with friends and loved ones, will cherish his memory and legacy.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his dedication, service, and unwavering integrity.
