The world lost a beautiful, feisty woman on July 25, 2017 when Dorothy Jean (Henley) Phillips was reborn as a child of heaven.
She was born in Columbiana, OH to Lucille A. Sheldon and Robert Henley, and lived there as a young child. She was raised in Akron, OH by her mother and step-father George M. Tarr, Sr. who she considered her dad.
In 1962, she graduated from Buchtel High School and on September 15 she married the love of her life, Thomas G. Phillips, Sr. in 1963, she welcomed her first son, Thomas G., Jr. Her second son, Michael W. was born in 1966.
The family moved to Norton, OH where Dorothy was active with the Band Boosters. She also loved to sit outside, meeting for breakfast, talking over coffee, visiting Maine and eating lobster and shrimp.
In 1990, her world changed when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. No matter what her illness did to her, she fought back.
In 2000, she moved to Copley Health Center where she was a resident until her death. While there, she served as President of the Residents Council for 9 years and vice-president in other years. She was also a member of the food committee and the caller for Bingo and other games. She loved coffee and conversation, baking, the Bingo Bucks store, going out to eat or the mall, sitting outside (she had quite the tan), Wii bowling and church.
She was predeceased by her husband, parents, grandparents and daughter-in-law, Monica Phillips. Left to honor her memory are her sons, her sister Dr. Kathleen L. Tarr (Wadsworth), step-brother, John S. Tarr (San Francisco); granddaughter, Jamie Raymond; great-granddaughter, Joscalynn; and many, many friends and extended family. A special "thank you" to the staff at Copley Health Center for her care for so many years.
At the time of her passing, she donated her brain and spine to the MS Society for research. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the MS Society, Ohio Buckeye Chapter, 6155 Rockside Rd, Cleveland, OH 44131.
