Dr. Robert E. Ferguson passed away June 2nd, 2007.
He was born on December 16, 1923 in Pennsylvania, the son of the late Everette and Alice Ferguson. Following graduation from East Palestine High School , he entered the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he served on the destroyer Robert I. Paine for three years in the Atlantic and Mediterranean areas. He graduated form Kent State University with a B.S. in Education in 1949 and an M.A. in 1950. He completed his Doctor of Education degree in 1965 at Case Western Reserve University . He was principal of Price and Richardson Elementary Schools in Cuyahoga Falls until 1965. He then went to the University of Akron where he became Dept. Chairman of Elementary Education until 1984 when he semi-retired. He received many grants from Martha Holden Jennings Foundation to train school principals and served as the Director for Exchange Teachers from Argentina . He was a member of First United Methodist Church , Kiwanis, Torch Club of Akron, The Association of the University of Akron Retirees , and served on the Cuyahoga Falls Library Board.
Robert is survived by his wife, Katie; brother Donald (Ann) Ferguson of Florida; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jim & Alice Poth of OH, Jim & Sally Smith of OH; nephews and nieces, Jeff & Marie Poth of PA, Tim & Valerie Pizzino of OH, Jamie & Mark Crowe of OH, Pam & Bill Boyd of OH, Jack Ferguson of FL, Mike & Jill Ferguson of FL, Donald Jr. & Suzanne Ferguson of FL, Ann & Steve Locke of FL, Jennifer & Sam Ponte of FL; and many great nephews, nieces, cousins and dear friends.
He loved sports, sailing, golf, music, and his summer home on Middle Bass Island. He also loved his faithful dog and walking companion, Kasie. He and his wife, Katie, traveled extensively with "Classrooms Around the World" sponsored by the University of Akron.
He will be remembered for his dedication to teaching and concern for students, friends and family. He was a one-of-a kind person- was loved and cherished by all who knew him. He faced life with the dignity, style and grace that he lived every day of his life. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends who loved him dearly.
Cremation and entombment have taken place at Northlawn Memorial Gardens. A Memorial Service, celebrating Bob's life, will be held June 7, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 245 Portage Tr., Cuyahoga Falls, OH with Rev. Marvin Brown and Rev. Susan Lausch officiating.
