Edward Travis

CUYAHOGA FALLS - Edward H. Travis, age 70, passed away suddenly on May 21, 2010.

Survived by his most beloved wife of 44 years, Joan E. Travis, and his dear, lovely daughters, Lisa M Dezelan, of Richfield, and Deborah L Ruhlman, of Milford, cherished grandchildren, MacKenzie, Allison, Grace and Olivia. Preceded by his sister Marilyn Thrill, he also leaves brother Tom (Rita) Travis of Minster and sister Marj Ditzel of California, along with many nieces and nephews.

Also known as Captain Ed, of the Cuyahoga Falls Parks and Recreation Riverboats, he enjoyed touring visitors down the beautiful Cuyahoga River, sharing area history and good humor. He was born on April 18, 1940 in Dayton, where he grew up as an all-star athlete at Chaminade High School. He pitched the no hit 17-0 game on July 10th 1958 that led to his scouting by the Cincinnati Reds. He chose Bowling Green State University from 13 colleges offering athletic scholarships for his prowess on the football field and played on the 1959 Bowling Green football team that went 9-0 and was named the "College Division" national champion. While a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, he met his lifelong love, Joan on a blind date. He courted her long distance while serving 4 years in the U.S. Navy, coming home to marriage and family life. He retired early from a 30 year career at CEI to spend time with the family he loved. Ed's greatest joy was his wife and family. "Big Ed" was a kind and gentle man, always offering a helping hand to those in need. If he could say a word to anyone to brighten their day, it would happen. His love and compassion touched all. He will be missed by family and friends tremendously.

There will be no calling hours, as Ed wished to be cremated. Final resting place will be Oakwood Cemetery. A Memorial Service in his honor will be conducted at a later date. Memorials may be made to Haven of Rest Ministries, P.O. Box 547, Akron, OH 44309-0547 in his memory. And as he always said, "I love you more."
Arrangements handled by Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home, 330-928-2147.
