Evelyn Crawford, 81, of Tallmadge, passed away on March 23, 2025. She was born in Erie, PA, to Arthur and Catherine Crawford, and grew up in northwestern Pennsylvania, where she graduated from Oil City High School and Grove City College.
After college she moved to Ohio and became a dedicated elementary school teacher. She taught for thirty years, most of them at Lincoln Elementary School in Cuyahoga Falls. With the exception of one year teaching first grade, she spent her career teaching second graders - and liked to describe them as being her favorite age. Evelyn loved music, and enjoyed singing for a number of years with Forever Harmony, a women’s a cappella chorus specializing in barbershop favorites. She was a member of the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary and served a term as its Vice President. She also belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma professional society for women educators. She loved to travel and enjoyed trips to Europe, Canada and the western United States, especially to see the picturesque mountain regions. Her greatest volunteer commitment was to her church, First United Methodist Church of Cuyahoga Falls. She particularly loved choral music, and considered it a privilege to sing in the Chancel Choir. She was a member of the Visitation Committee and made regular trips to Laurel Lake Retirement Community to visit older church members. She was also a participant in the Prayer Shawl Ministry, and an active member of the Susanna Circle of the United Women in Faith. Evelyn was an exceptionally kind and generous person. She readily gave help to friends and neighbors who had needs for assistance. She loved going out for lunch with good friends. She liked to surprise people with treats - and her lemon squares became legendary! She will be dearly missed by many, but the memory of her loving spirit will live on.
Evelyn is survived by sisters Jean Luker and Mary Ann Vrabel (Don) and nieces Anne Luker and Amanda Luker (Bryan Alft), and grandnieces Simone Luker-Alft and Hazel Luker-Alft.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial gifts, designated for the Music Fund, may be sent to First United Methodist Church of Cuyahoga Falls, 245 Portage Trail, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio 44221.
