Helen D. Hapanowicz (nee Mock), long time resident of Cuyahoga Falls, passed away at the age of 94 on September 18, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
In addition to her parents Schelley and Katie (Bence) and her brother Franklin Mock, Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Steve and her granddaughter Hannah.
She is survived by her children, Steve (Carol), Mark (Peggy) and Jon (Carmela) Hapanowicz, Barbara (Matt) Swysgood, and Christine (David) Baker; 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Helen was born and raised in Akron and was a graduate of Garfield High School. She went on to attend Ohio University and later received a master’s degree from Kent State University.
Helen enjoyed a teaching career that spanned 38 years beginning in the Columbus Public School System and later at Capital University. She went on to teach at Canton Central Catholic High School where she was instrumental in introducing interscholastic track competition for girls in Stark County. She was a nationally rated official in basketball, volleyball and track, and officiated at the first State Track meet for girls in Ohio. She enjoyed her last 24 years of teaching working in the Cuyahoga Falls School System.
Helen was a very active member of Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Cuyahoga Falls, serving in various church groups and volunteering to help with several church activities. She was also a life member of the National Education Association and the National Health, Physical Education and Recreation Association.
Helen shared many interests with her beloved husband, including music, gardening, traveling with friends, and playing golf. She was also an avid bridge player and filled any free time with reading, painting and genealogical research.
The family will receive friends from 10-11 am on Monday, September 23, 2024, with a memorial service beginning at 11 am, all at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 130 Broad Blvd., Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Pilgrim United Church of Christ or Haven of Rest, 175 E. Market St., Akron, OH 44308.
