"Aunt" Helen B. Piekarski
Aunt Helen died on June 21,2015 at the age of 95 with her nieces by her side.
She was born on March 22,1920 to Stephan Bichun and Stella (Bastuk) Bichun in Akron, Ohio. Helen attended Lane Grade School and graduated from West High School in 1938. She performed as a toe and tap dancer through the Lynch Studio as a young girl. During the war years, Aunt Helen was a "Rosie the Riveter". She spent her early adult years as a nanny. Later she had a career in retail, including various downtown department stores and Henry B. Ball Jewelers, from which she retired. She was a longtime member of St. Hedwigs Catholic Church.
Helen married the love of her life, Felix Piekarski, in January 1947. They lived in Silver Lake, worked together, traveled a lot, played cards with friends and shared many dances until his death in 1970.
Helen was an active member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Polish Legion of American Veterans. She logged 2500 volunteer hours at the V.A. Medical Center. She was honored as a PLAV "Women" of the year for her service.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband Felix, brothers Walter (Jennie) Bikun and David (Norma)Bichun and her niece Pam Jennings. She is survived by nephews and nieces Jim and Pam Bikun, Dennis and Tena Bikun, Gary and Barb Bikun, Lee and Jim Hamill, Linda and Mike Miller and Christy Hamill and Bob Cady ,great nephews and niece Steve and Ale' Bikun,Matthew Bikun and Elizabeth Bikun plus so many others who loved her and knew her as "the best Aunt ever".
Since 2001 Helen has been a resident of Concordia at Sumner in Copley. The family wishes to thank the staff for taking such good care of Helen over the years. Thanks are also extended to the team at Great Lakes Hospice Center for their kindness during the past several months.
A celebration of Helen's life will be held Friday, 11am June 26, 2015 at the Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home,1930 Front St. Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, 44221. Rev. Charles Lentner officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the services. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of other remembrances, memorials may be made to the Battered Women's Shelter of Summit and Medina Counties, 974 E. Market St., Akron, Ohio 44305. Services entrusted to Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home and Crematory, 330-928-2147.
