James Hummel

CUYAHOGA FALLS - James "Jim" L. Hummel, 68, passed away December 29, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born January 24, 1947 in Akron. He grew up in Stow and was a 1965 graduate of Stow High School, and Kent State University. Jim, a Vietnam veteran, served in the 25th Infantry Division of the United States Army, receiving a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.
In 1972, Jim married fellow Stow graduate Kathy Ruble, which began an amazing 43 year partnership in every way. They settled in Cuyahoga Falls in 1975 and began raising their family. In 1978, Jim opened the Falls Coffee Shoppe (formerly Spudnuts) at Front Street and Portage Trail. Then in 1983, Jim expanded with the Silver Swan Tavern, where he served as the "chief cook and bottle washer" for more than 30 years. He made the Swan a true family business with both Fred and Carrie pitching in from an early age. Fred joined Jim at the Swan full-time in 2001. Jim was a generous and compassionate man, willing to help whenever he could. He always had an opinion to share and a story to tell.

Preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Pauline; and sister and brother-in-law, Marsha and Otis Lukens. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Kathy; son, Fred (Meagan Gies); daughter, Carrie (Greg) Snyder; grandchildren, Isabella, Maxwell and Collin Snyder; brother, Mike (Debbie) Hummel; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Sue and Pat Morrow, Cheryl and Rick Hanna, Lisa and Dwayne Snodgrass; much loved nieces and nephews, extended family and his Silver Swan family.
