Joan "Toots" Ginn

Joan “Toots” Ginn, age 89, of Brimfield, Ohio, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2023.

Joan is survived by her sons, Michael Ginn and Terry Ginn, her granddaughters, Erin Ginn and Abby Ginn, her daughter in-laws, Mitzie Ginn and Dafne Ginn, her sister in-laws, Margaret Colant and Sally Winer, step grandchildren, Seth and Autumn and a large extended family. She is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas [Tom] Ginn and her brother, Robert [Bob] Winer.

Joan was a mighty warrior in a tiny body. She was deeply devoted to her husband Thomas, openly loved her two sons and granddaughters. She never missed an important moment in their lives. And they loved her back. Theirs was a special bond built on makeup, nails, lipstick, hours of playing dolls, and laughter.

Joan and Tom treasured their yearly trips to Myrtle Beach and joyful sounds of the neighborhood kids in the backyard pool.

She loved food, both cooking for others and dining with family and friends. People could not get enough of her famous Kolache nut rolls. Joan loved music and dancing, if you could keep up with her. She was dedicated to her NY Yankees. If you listen hard you can hear, “Joe, you left that pitcher in there too long!”

Joan was born February 16, 1934, in Akron, Ohio, the daughter of Eugene and Margaret Winer. She picked up the nickname “Toots” due to her smaller size. Joan and her brother Bob were raised by their mom and their stepfather, John Leidal, who was an important figure in all of our lives.

While some saw her as a stay-at-home mom, Joan played an instrumental role in her husband’s and son Terry’s advertising business, doing whatever it took to support them. She was also proud of her first job at Edfred Music.

The presence that she brought to every room will be missed.

We would like to give special thanks to Mulberry Memory Care, Kentridge Assisted Living, Traditions Hospice, Akron Visiting Angels, Dr. Scott Higley, Laurea Sieloff and Marti Schmucker for being there for Joan over the past few years.

Calling hours have been set for Friday, September 22, from 5-8 PM at Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home 1930 Front St. Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221. There will be church services on Saturday, September 23 at 10 AM at Saint Peters of the Field, 3487 Old Forge Rd., Rootstown, and a celebration of Joan’s life will follow.

While flowers are welcome, we are encouraging donations to the Akron Blind Center, any organizations that help with Dementia, to your local Senior Homes-Assisted Living & Nursing for Musicians & Singers to perform and entertain. Music matters.
