For any who were fortunate enough to spend time with Joe Schersing, you know that he was one of the most humble, most helpful, and most hilarious folks you could ever meet. Joe worked for thirty years for Ohio Bell, and this loyalty and dedication permeated all areas of his life. He'd be out the door in one minute to drive you to work, or help you move furniture, or fix your phone line.
Probably one of the least materialistic people who ever lived, what he valued most was time with his loved ones. He once said that he had "nothing but time" for his family and friends, and they are saddened that his time here has come to an end.
Joe has gone peacefully to join his beloved wife of 60 years, Frances, who left us in November. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Joe Schersing, all of his nine older siblings, and his daughter, Debra (Keith) Koloniar. He is survived by his daughters Brenda Nelson and Christy Schersing, his son-in-law Jim Nelson, his grandchildren Ryan (Beth) Nelson, Cheryl (RaAl Cuiriz) Nelson, Heather (Nick) Branham, Kevin Koloniar, Amanda Dardenne, Melissa Dardenne, and Jessica Koloniar, as well as several great-grandchildren, extended family members, and many friends.
Joe had a passion for sports, and played basketball (he was an all state guard for South High School in 1950) and softball, which he played most of his life, including on traveling teams in his later years. He was a loyal fan of all Cleveland teams, and he followed all of the sports of every one of the schools that his grandchildren attended. Other than the time he spent with the US Army during the Korean War, he spent all the years of his life in Akron and Cuyahoga Falls, and was friendly to everyone in the community there. He especially loved to frequent the Natatorium, as much to visit with friends as to exercise.
The family would like to especially thank Harbor Light Hospice for their recent attentive care to both Fran and Joe.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. If you would like to honor Joe, spread peace and love to your people today, and remember to make them laugh. Services entrusted to Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home and Crematory, 330-928-2147.
