John Henry Mascio, 89, went home to be with our heavenly father on October 21, 2023.
John was born on December 25th, 1933, in Ravenna, Ohio. He attended Kent State University and then married his high school sweetheart, Rose Marie. They moved to Cuyahoga Falls in 1957 and for many years he was an accomplished real estate broker and was active in St. Jospeh’s Parish, as well as several other community organizations.
John was an avid sports fan of all Ohio teams, but it all started in 1953-1957 when he assisted the equipment manager of the Cleveland Browns. Some of John’s fondest memories were taking his grandsons to Jacobs Field and Ohio State football games.
Over the past 50 years, John was very active with Walsh Jesuit High School. His love for young athletes, especially wrestlers, is what inspired his service to the athletic department. He was known as the “Godfather” of the Ironman Wrestling Tournament and because of his dedication over the years, a special award was created in his honor called the “Mascio Ultimate Warrior Award.”
John will be remembered for his magnetic personality, kind heart, and witty charm. But out of all his accomplishments, his family by far was his greatest love. The happiest times for him were Sundays together with his loved ones enjoying his homemade Italian cooking.
John was preceded in death his brother, Joseph Mascio and beloved grandson, Alan Garner. He is survived by his wife, Rose Marie (Sarrocco) of 67 years and children Christine (John) Sauner of Cuyahoga Falls, Patrick (Kathy) Mascio of Twinsburg and Carolyn (John) Roussel of Cuyahoga Falls. Grandchildren David Garner (Columbus), Theresa Garner (Akron), John (Iris) Mascio, Joseph Mascio (Cuyahoga Falls), Cassie Brock (Stow) and Grace Ruane (Cuyahoga Falls), 9 great grandchildren and other family members and friends.
He will be laid to rest privately at Oakwood Cemetery. It is the wish of the family, in lieu of flowers, please make donations in John’s memory to: Walsh Jesuit High School, www.walshjesuit.org/give or Venmo @WalshJesuit. Please feel free to share any special memories.
Arrangements entrusted to Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home & Crematory, 330-928-2147.
