CUYAHOGA FALLS - John Henry Smail, 93, passed away on December 24, 2010. John was born in Northampton, OH on January 30, 1917, graduated from South High School in 1935 and immediately went to work with National Rubber Machinery Company (NRM Corporation) as an apprentice machinist. He retired in 1979 after 43 years of service. John was a resident of Cuyahoga Falls since 1950. He was an avid fisherman who loved to take his boat to Lake Erie and Portage Lakes. As a young man he loved to hunt and he enjoyed bowling for many years.

John also loved to Polka dance and was an active member of the Sons of Herman, German American Club, Fraternal Order of Police Association and a social member of the Polish Club. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Cuyahoga Falls and the Masonic Lodge. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Mary Smail; his wife of 60 years, Otillia (Tillie) Pfenning Smail; his daughter, Jacqueline Anderson; his great-grandson, Devin Williams and Devin's mother, Vickie Williams and John's sister, Marie Neidert. He was also preceded in death by his best friend and companion, his dog Buddy. John is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Powell of Naples, FL; grandchildren, Dane (Dana Hall) of Celebration, FL, Dana (Chip) Newman of Naples, FL, Bill (Darlene) Williams of Medina, OH, Trayce (John) Hanlon of Norwalk, OH; great-grandchildren, Aaron Campbell, Johnny and Jackie Chance, Dakota and Austin Hanlon, Madison and Riken Newman and great-great-granddaughter, Kalyn Rogers. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Special thanks go to his granddaughter, Trayce Hanlon for her dedicated and loving care of her grandfather in the final months of his life.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 22 at 1:00 pm in The Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home 1930 Front St. Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221. In lieu of other remembrances, memorial donations may be made to Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870. Arrangements handled by Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home, 330-928-2147.
