CUYAHOGA FALLS – Laszlo (Larry) Molnar was born in Mezokovesd, Hungary on January 18, 1939 and passed away on September 18, 2018 at the age of 79.
In November of 1956 he escaped from Hungary during the 1956 Hungarian revolution, making his way across Hungary and crossing the border into Austria. From Austria, he was transported to Bremerhaven, Germany where he boarded a U.S. Army troop ship bound for the United States. He arrived in the U.S. on January 1, 1957 and was sent to Camp Kilmer, New Jersey which was a former U.S. Army base and was reopened to house the Hungarian refugees. He was sponsored by a couple in Akron, Ohio, Mr. & Mrs. Matyas Sugar, and arrived in Akron on his 18th birthday.
Larry worked in the Ironworker trade for over 50 years and was a member of Cleveland Local 17 of the Ironworkers Union. He was also a member of the Hungarian American Club in Akron, the German Family Society and the Sons of Herman Club.
Larry enjoyed soccer, playing on several local teams for many years. He also enjoyed hunting and visiting casinos.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Andras and Margit (Marton) Molnar and his brother, Andras and sisters, Margit Farkas and Erszebet Hagen, all in Hungary.
He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Linda (Gunther) Molnar and his children, daughter, Laura, son Michael and his wife Jennifer, and one grandson, Julian Thompson.
There will be no calling hours. Friends are invited to a casual celebration of Larry’s life on Saturday, October 20, 2018 from Noon until 4:00 PM at the Hungarian American Club, 694 E. Waterloo Rd., Akron, OH, 44306. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations in his name may be made to the Hungarian American Club, 694 E. Waterloo Rd., Akron, OH 44306. Services entrusted to Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home & Crematory, 330-928-2147.
