CUYAHOGA FALLS Major Betty Richardson celebrated her 95th birthday on June 22 and passed away on June 30, 2017. She is survived by her 3 children Shari Smith - Norwalk, OH, Phil (Judy) Richardson - Houston, TX, and Theressa (John) Ziegler - Tallmadge, OH, 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her husband Major S. Morris Richardson and daughter Judith Saur. Born on June 22, 1922, Major Betty Richardson spent her first 24 years in Zanesville, OH. She graduated from Zanesville High in 1940 and from the Salvation Army Training College in New York City in 1946. She married S. Morris on August 25, 1940.
Major Betty spent her long life serving her family, God and community. During her career as a Salvation Army officer she served with her husband at 13 appointments beginning in Frankfort, KY in 1946, including Akron, OH from 1966 to 1970 and retiring from New York City in 1984. They retired to Cuyahoga Falls, OH where she continued her ministry especially through the Salvation Army Women's Home League and Auxiliary programs.
Major Betty will be remembered as a very caring and supportive mother, wife and friend. She was a good cook and strong family matriarch. She loved her children, grandchildren, and dog Betsy, nature, reading, homemaking and traveling. Janet Tussing, her best friend for 13 years and her daily dining and card companion. Major Betty lit up the room wherever she was and often was the life of the party with her humor and genuine interest in everyone.
Friends may call from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, July 6 in the Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home, 1930 Front St, Cuyahoga Falls and from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 7 at the Salvation Army, 190 S. Maple St, Akron, OH 44302 where a Memorial Service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Commissioners Larry and Gillian Bosh officiating. Interment Northlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Akron Salvation Army Home League in memory of Major Betty Richardson. Services entrusted to Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home and Crematory, 330-928-2147.
