Marjorie K. Miles died July 21, 2011. Mrs. Miles was born and raised in Akron, attending "Old" Central High School graduating in 1939. She graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art, formerly the Cleveland School of Art and received her Bachelor's Degree in 1943 from Western Reserve University (Case Western Reserve).
Upon her marriage to Richard Miles in 1946, she joined him in Columbus where Mr. Miles was continuing his education having returned from WWII. In Columbus, Mrs. Miles became Interior Display Director at F & R. Lazarus Co.
Returning to Cuyahoga Falls, Mrs. Miles became active in her community doing a variety of volunteer projects, serving on one of the first beautification committees in the city and was one of the earliest guides at Stan Hywet. She was an active P.T.A. worker in schools her children attended. During the Falls 175th Anniversary Celebration, Mrs. Miles organized a group of local women and executed a large quilt commemorating the Falls as it was during the 175th. Mrs. Miles designed most of the squares. It was presented to The Taylor Memorial Library. "Impressions of a City" is still owned by the library. Mrs. Miles taught art from Kindergarten to College including teaching craft classes at the Falls Y. She was a past board member of the Textile Arts Alliance of the Cleveland Museum of Art and was an active member until her death.
Mrs. Miles had her work accepted for many shows at the Cleveland Museum and Canton Art Museum winning first prize in the All Ohio Show in crafts. She has had numerous awards and one woman shows and her work is in a number of private collections.
For many years and until recently, Mrs. Miles has been an active board member of Gallery 732 of the Akron Woman's City Club and a past board member of the Cuyahoga Falls Women's Club.
Mrs. Miles was a chairperson of Northeastern Ohio Artists for decades. She hunted up exciting talent to exhibit them at Gallery 732 of Akron Women's City Club giving them exposure in the Akron area they otherwise would not have.
The Miles had celebrated 55 years of marriage. Preceded in death by her husband, Richard and sister Marilyn Knight, she is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Kim and Douglas and Louise; daughter and son-in-law, Marcye and Gene Gough and grandchildren, Spencer and Wesley Miles and Andrew and Elizabeth Gough and niece, Kim Martin and nephew, Kirk Knight.
In lieu of other remembrances, memorials may be made to the Alumni Fund of the Cleveland Institute of Art, 11141 East Blvd. Cleveland, OH 44106-1710 or Taylor Memorial Library, 2015 3rd St. Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221. The Family will greet friends from 4:00 to 7:00 pm Sunday, July 31 in the private dining room at the Village Center at the Village of St. Edwards, 3125 Smith Rd. Fairlawn, OH 44333. A Committal Service will be conducted at 10:30 am Monday, August 1 in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
