Joan was a devoted wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma and aunt. Her interests were varied - reading, antiquing, bowling, traveling, as well as being an avid golfer. She was a member of Firestone C.C., Silver Lake C.C., and Fox Den's golf leagues for many years. She introduced her daughters to golf when she coordinated the Junior Golf League at Firestone C.C. in the late 1960's. She loved to travel and follow her grandsons in their school and athletic activities. Most of all, she loved to shop!
Joan was employed at Klein's Pharmacy in its early years and was a former Avon lady in the era of door to door sales.
A long time volunteer with the Northern Ohio Golf Charities; her 46 years of volunteer work included the WGC Bridgestone Invitational, NEC Invitational, NEC World Series of Golf, ( Women's Chairperson), World Series of Golf, the PGA Championships in 1966 and 1975, as well as the American Golf Classic. She was an eternally optimistic but long suffering fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears.
An active member of the Church in Silver Lake, she was involved in the Bell Choir as well as volunteering for their "Lunch on Us" program.
The family would like to thank Dr. Kretchmer, Dr. Botros, and the Akron City Hospital 3rd Floor ICU nurses for their compassionate care.
She lived an active and full life despite the effects of the COPD. Joan was known for her wit, wisdom, and determination. Her lasting advice to all: "Don't ever start smoking".
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 11A.M. at the Church in Silver Lake 2951 Kent Road. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the American Lung Association.
