Randall A. Weitzell, age 100, was called home peacefully by his Lord and Savior on January 24, 2025.
Known to his grandchildren as Pop and to his friends and family, as Randy.
Born in Maryland, he moved to Cuyahoga Falls at the age of 2, and would become a lifelong resident.
Randy is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 75 years, Irene, and his son Larry. He is survived by his daughter Diane, grandchildren Larry (Anna), Stacey (Chris), and Kelley (Roger). His great-grandchildren Tyler, Chloe (Hunter), Bradyn, Makenna and great-great-grandson, Hayden.
Randy proudly served in World War II as a member of the 34th Infantry Division in the U.S. Army. He fought valiantly on the front lines as part of the mortar squad in Italy, participating in the Battle at the Abbey of Monte Cassino. Because of his service, he was awarded the Purple Heart Bronze Star with two clusters, The Combat Infantry Badge as well as many campaign ribbons. Upon returning home he attended the Horology Institute of Watch and Clock Repair through the GI Bill of Rights. He eventually owned and operated his own jewelry store on Portage Trail for a short time. He enjoyed working on clocks and watches throughout the rest of his life. Randy was so proud to be a veteran. His service to his country was just one example of the strength and determination that defined his character.
A proud and respected member of the Cuyahoga Falls community, Randy retired as a lieutenant from the Cuyahoga Falls Police Department after 25 years of service. He founded ABC Weitzell Stripping and Parking Lot Maintenance Company in 1957. He was 90 years old when he stripped his last parking lot. His strong work ethic and commitment to family and community were hallmarks of his life.
Randy was a longtime member of Northwest Ave Church of Christ. He was also a proud member of the Cuyahoga Falls Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #49, Masonic Lodge #183 as a 32nd Degree Mason. Member of the Tadmor Shrine Temple and past President of the Cuyahoga Falls Shrine Club. He was also a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Commanders Club.
Randy was known for his gentle spirit, his love of family, and his devotion to spending time with all of his grandchildren, especially his great grandchildren. His legacy of hard work, kindness, and quiet strength will live on in all who knew him.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the loving and caring staff at Heather Knoll Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, as well as the staff with WellSpring Hospice for their exceptional support during his final days.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM on Tuesday January 28, 2025 at the Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home, 1930 Front St. Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221, where a funeral service will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday January 29. Interment will be at Northlawn Memorial Gardens.
