CUYAHOGA FALLS - Reynold W. Schendel, 92, passed away December 13, 2007 after a long illness. He was born December 2, 1915 in Willmar, Saskatchewan, Canada and had resided in Cuyahoga Falls since 1985. Mr. Schendel was an auto mechanic who owned and operated Dale's Garage in Downer's Grove, Illinois, retiring in 1982. He married Florence B. Gerlib in 1939, who predeceased him in 1980. Together they had two daughters, Brenda (David) Lietz of Cuyahoga Falls and Diane (Phillip) Backhus, of San Antonio, Texas. In 1982, he married Evelyn H. Counter, and they recently celebrated their silver wedding anniversary.
Ray is survived by his wife, Evelyn, his daughters and sons-in-law, grandchildren Rebecca (Marc) Maxhimer, Michael (Jessica) Lietz, Sandra Lietz, Erich, Colin, Melissa and Jessica Backhus, and great-grandchildren Mackenzie and Natalya. He will also be missed by the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of his wife, Evelyn. He is also survived by his sister, Johanna Arndt, and many relatives in Canada.
Ray was a faithful member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and actively participated in the church Garden Club. In his retirement years, he enjoyed maintaining his yard and was particularly skilled at repairing lawn and garden equipment for his friends and neighbors. He was an inventive man, always willing to lend a hand to those in need, who awoke each morning looking for something to do.
A memorial service will be held on December 30 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2141 Fifth Street, Cuyahoga Falls, Reverend Keith Johnson officiating. Calling hours will be at 1:00, with a service of celebration at 3:00 PM. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Redeemer Lutheran Church Building Fund or to the Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service.
