Richard Neil Dain

Richard (Dick) Dain passed away at the age of 95 on January 19, 2025. Dick was born June 16, 1929, in Meadville, PA to Burton W. and Elma (Maloney) Dain. He graduated from Alfred University in Alfred, NY with a degree in radio communications and broadcast engineering. He returned to Meadville where he met the love of his life, Greta Mae Horr in 1950. In 1963, they moved to Stow, OH where he serviced two-way radio communication systems and eventually held radio engineering jobs at local radio stations. He joined WKSU-FM at Kent State University in 1974. In 1976, he started the Tri-County Radio Reading Service to read newspapers to the blind. In 1982 and 1983, he won OEBIE awards from the Ohio Educational Broadcast Commission for technical achievement for developing a special recording van to tape off-site broadcasts and for convincing the FCC that the station should become omni-directional instead of a single direction system. In 1988, he was inducted into the Akron Radio Hall of Fame. He retired from WKSU-FM at the end of 1989.

Dick and Greta loved to travel in their RV during the summer months with local RV clubs and often with some of their grandchildren. They were “snowbirds” to Florida during the winter months. In 1998, they relocated permanently to their “happy place” at Saddlebag Lake Resort in Lake Wales, FL. They quickly became involved in the clubs and activities of the resort. Dick became involved in the operations of the gated community and eventually served as President of the Board of Directors.

One of his proudest affiliations was with the Masonic Order where he attained the level of Master Mason in May 1966.

His death is preceded by Greta, his wife of 63 years, his parents, his brothers Bob and Paul, and his sister Aileen Prodan. He is survived by his three children, Diana (Ron) Truxell, Bill (Rachelle), and Sandy (Luther) Millsaps; his seven grandchildren, Kevin Truxell, Scott (Sarah Jackson) Truxell, Elizabeth (Brett) Beebe, Katie (Kurt) Breckenridge, Abby (David Hampu) Millsaps, Ethan (Amy) Millsaps, and Molly Millsaps; eleven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at Danbury Hudson Memory Care for their care and kindness to Dad and to Summa Hospice for their compassion and care during his last months.

Cremation has taken place and there will be a private celebration of life at a later date.
