CUYAHOGA FALLS - With heavy hearts, Jennifer Dever and I (Elizabeth Ryan) with our husbands Dennis Dever and Daniel Ryan announce the passing of our dad, Robert Bernard Gemmill on 9 September 2015. After 96 years his heart announced it had enough and ushered him off to Marge, his wife of 48 years, who left us all too soon, 23 years ago.
He was a tough old bird and survived more things than one person should have to go through in a lifetime. In WWII he was in the 107th Calvary (tanks instead of horses), and was a tank mechanic and operator in France and Germany. As a kid, when we went camping I would ask him to come along, "I did enough camping in the war," he would tell me.
He loved to garden and grew tomatoes and peppers in the back yard, but his big garden was at Granny and Grandpa Gemmill's in Northampton that produced enough vegetables to freeze for winter.
He was born in Meadville, PA and raised in Ellet. After the war he got a job at Goodyear where he retired after 35 years. He went by the nickname of Bernie at work.
Brothers: James and wife Margie, Paul and wife Irene, Carl and wife Mary, and Bill have all gone on before him. The only Brother left is Mike and wife Sharon. There are also nieces and nephews.
Grandchildren, Ruben, Raphael and Raleigh Ryan and Maggie and Alex Dever will all miss Grandpa. And great-granddaughter, Stella Blu Ryan, daughter of Ruben did not get a chance to really know him.
Thanks to his 24/7 team that made it possible for him to stay in his own home, Jennifer, me, Daniel (who said we could make it work at home), Raleigh, Ruben and Iris from Visiting Angels who always had a big smile for him. Also thanks to Nathan his home Physical Therapist, Jennifer his home Occupational therapist and Home Nurse Anita who all brought some inspiration into his life.
Dad had a gruff exterior but a heart of gold and was always ready to help his girls.
