Russell L. Brokaw, age 80 of Cuyahoga Falls, passed away on April 28th 2022. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. Russell was born in Bellville, Ohio on a farm where he grew up. After graduating from high school, Mr. Brokaw served in the U.S. Army, and was stationed at the White House during the Kennedy administration as a cryptographer. Following his service in the Army, he had a 28 year career with the Ohio State Highway Patrol and retired as a Sergeant. He also served as a driving instructor and felony apprehension coach at the Highway Patrol Academy. Mr. Brokaw received several awards and ribbons for his actions with situations encountered while on the State Highway Patrol.
He was an avid Ohio State football fan, working the home games at Ohio Stadium and attending games after retirement. He also enjoyed attending auctions and selling items on Ebay for many years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Cuyahoga Falls, Retired Troopers Association, and the FOP.
Russell is survived by his loving wife Sue of 59-1/2 years of marriage, daughters, Kimberly (John) Shaffer, and Kristina (Joe) Janesh, son Keith (Terri) Brokaw, grandchildren Matthew (Nevada Craig, fiancé) Tasker, Jessica Tasker, Trenton and Austin Janesh, and step grandchildren, Janie (Brian) Augsburger, Abbie (Joe) Franchino, Maddie Ingersoll (T.J. Blanken, fiancé), and Joshua and Evelyn Shaffer, and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Rosalie Brokaw, brother Ronald Brokaw (Regina), brother-in-law Phillip Haines, sister-in-law Ruthy Brokaw, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Bessie Brokaw, brothers Raymond (Mary) and Richard Brokaw, sister Ruth (Lester) Brubaker, and sister-in-law Janet Haines.
The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Southern Hospice Care for their loving care and attendance to Russell in his final peaceful days. Guests are welcome for visitation from 10 am - noon on Thursday, May 5, 2022 at Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home, 1930 Front St., Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221. A memorial service will be held at noon, also at the funeral home. Immediately following the services there will be a procession to Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery where Mr. Brokaw will be laid to rest with military honors.
