CUYAHOGA FALLS - Ruth J. Detrow passed away Monday, September 29, 2008, in Newberry, SC. She was 88. She was born Ruth Jean Clapp to George and Jesse Clapp in St. Cloud, FL, on February 25, 1920. Following her birth, the family returned to their home in Kent, and Ruth graduated from Kent State University High School. She trained as a registered nurse at Akron Peoples Hospital (now Akron General), receiving her cap in 1941. Following her graduation from nurses training, she married Glenn D. Detrow, who preceded her in death in 2007 after more than 65 years of marriage.
A devoted mother, Ruth still found time to work for many years in the health care industry, notably in maternity at Akron General and in geriatrics at Pine Valley Manor in Richfield. She also cared for her aged mother and mother-in-law in her home on Wyoga Lake Rd. for several years.
Ruth was active with the First Christian Church in Cuyahoga Falls, serving as a Sunday school teacher and deaconess. She was also active in the local TOPS chapter, where she held several leadership positions. She loved to cook and was also skilled at a number of handicrafts, particularly knitting, crocheting, and cross stitch.
She and Glenn loved to travel, making many trips by car, train, plane, and ship, often visiting friends and relatives throughout the country. Following Glenn's death last year, she moved to Newberry, SC, to be closer to family.
Ruth is survived by three children, Carl (Carol) of Redlands, CA; Jay (Lynne), of Greer, SC; and Tom (Marilyn), of Chapin, SC; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
