Ruth Severson

CUYAHOGA FALLS - Ruth Evelyn Severson (Crouch), 90, passed away February 8, 2015. She was born July 25, 1924, in Green Mountain, Iowa. She moved to Ohio in 1958 and resided in Stow for the past 43 years.

Preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Earl, she is survived by her children: David (Betsy), Diane (Patrick) Mangan, Sheryl (Todd) Dunn and Joyce (Edward) Groggs; 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

A graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, Ruth taught school for many years, starting at age 19 in a one-room schoolhouse in Iowa during WWII, and later in Ohio. Ruth retired from teaching in the early 1960s to raise her family and to continue to read Bertrand Russell, among many other works. Her greatest joy, however, was in caring for children, whether her own or the students she taught.
Always extremely well informed, intellectually rigorous, complicated and compassionate, her influence on her children and grandchildren was formidable. Her passing is marked with sorrow; her life is recalled with joy.

Friends may call one hour prior to a 3 PM memorial service on Thursday February 12, 2015 in the Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home 1930 Front St. Cuyahoga Falls, OH, 44221. Inurnment Silver Springs Cemetery. In lieu of other remembrances, memorials may be made to the Kent State University Foundation.
