Sherrell Renee Wimer, 69, went home to be with the lord on October 12, 2024. She was reunited to walk the streets of gold with her parents Charles and Lena Fletcher and many other family members. Sherrell graduated from Marlington High School in 1973 and Akron School of Nursing in 1978. Sherrell exemplified what it means to be a servant leader through the various leadership positions she held in her life. She carried on the long military tradition that started when her family came over from Ireland by serving 11 years in the United States Army achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. While in the Army she met the love of her life Jim in 1979. After a few months of dating, they were married in 1980. With her military career complete Sherrell continued serving the community as a nurse. Nursing was her passion for 50 years. She enjoyed nursing so much that she taught nursing for 10 years for Canton City Schools Adult Education Program and was also Program Director. Sherrell was devoted to helping others all the way until the end. She volunteered as an instructor for the American Red Cross for 35 years. A lifelong calling to work with youth was fulfilled by volunteering in the nursery at various churches through the years, Girl Scout troop leader and Boy Scout den mother. A family tradition of attendance at Camp Wakonda in Sherrodsville, Ohio began for Sherrell when she was a child as a camper, moving to counselor and returning as camp nurse for several years when her children began attending. Her arms and heart were always open to any child that came into her home whether they were friends of her children, her grandchildren, great nieces or children of family friends that she often babysat for. Most recently as she was able she enjoyed volunteering at Cuyahoga Chapel Church of God. When Sherrell wasn’t busy helping others she enjoyed her family especially spoiling her grandchildren and attending their various activities such as dance and martial arts, gardening, birdwatching, crafting, reading, and cooking.
Sherrell is survived by her best friend and loving husband of 45 years Jim Wimer, daughter Renee (Brandon) Skipper and son Floyd (Coleen) Wimer, grandchildren Janie and George Wimer, and Theodore Skipper, brother David Fletcher and sister Melanie (Rod) Dray, Nephews Brandon (Carrie) Robson and Corey (Courtney) Fletcher and 3 great nieces.
