SILVER LAKE - Wayne Benson, 93, passed away December 10, 2016 after a long, courageous battle with dementia. Wayne and his beloved wife, Jean Benson, are now together again after 29 years.
Wayne was born in Dunlo, Pennsylvania to David and Edith Benson, January 28, 1923. He served in the US Navy during WWII, and earned his engineering degree at University of Pittsburgh. He married Mildred Jean Davies of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and moved to Silver Lake in 1958.
Wayne and Jean were a loving team as they raised their five children. He also volunteered to participate in local community activities such as coaching little league baseball and teaching Sunday school. Jean's passing at age 63, had a lasting effect on him.
In his working years, Wayne was employed by Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co., Bridgewater Machine Co., and Abex Corporation. Later, Wayne and friend Herb Barron, created the very successful Barron and Benson, Inc. tire mold company in 1973 in Akron. He retired in 1987, and enjoyed the leisure activities of golf, tennis and walking the trails in Virginia Kendall Park and around Silver Lake Village. He was also an avid sports enthusiast, and followed tennis and golf tournaments.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents Edith and David, his wife Jean of 41 years, his brothers Kenneth Benson of Pittsburgh, Rodman Benson of Seattle and his close friend Carol Kron. Wayne and Carol, both widowed, met at Silver Lake Church and became close companions for many years, until her passing, in 2007. He is survived by his children, Sallee Dick (Benson) (Vance Dick) of Ontario, David Benson of Macedonia, Mark (Jene Arbuckle) Benson of Tallmadge, Tom Benson of Hudson and Scott (Andy) Benson of Stow; his grandchildren, Emily, Nikki, Lydia, and Daniel; nieces, Karen Benson and Judith Ponton; nephews, Ken and Dave Benson, and many friends.
A Memorial Service will be held 2 PM on Thursday, December 15, 2016, in the Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home, 1930 Front St, Cuyahoga Falls. Chaplain Jane Strauss will be officiating. Following the memorial service, interment will be at the Oakwood Cemetery on Oakwood Drive. Following interment, a celebration of Wayne's life will be held at the Burntwood Tavern, 2291 Riverfront Parkway, Cuyahoga Falls. All are welcome.
